The Trinidad and Tobago chess team finished second in the Central American and Caribbean Junior chess Championships in Puerto Rico. T&T won one gold medal, one silver and four bronze to finish runners up behind host Puerto Rico in the nine team tournament. Barbados finished in third place. Shemilah James of St Ursula's Girls' Anglican School won T&T's lone gold medal in the Female Under-10 competition, while Fatima College's Joshua Johnson won silver in the Male Under-12 category. The other T&T players who won medals were Javanna Smith, Tyler-Marie Mungal, Shannon Yearwood and Sean Yearwood. The T&T players who did not medal were Zaakir Razark, Kyron Agostini, Mycah Francis, Della Marie Walcott, who is a past champion, Gabriella Johnson, Najarah Rahaman, Rishon Ramlogan, Sadiqah Razark and Sylvan Yearwood. The other countries taking part in the tournament were Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Panama and Honduras.
T&T coach international master Raul Perez Hernandez of Cuba accompanied the team to Puerto Rico and has been with the national team for several years assisting the local chess players in their development. Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association (TTCA) president Russell Smith also accompanied the team as manager.
Smith praised the hard work done by the players and the solid support of coach Raul during the trip.
"Our junior players continue to demonstrate good results at home and abroad," Smith said.
"This can only get better when our Chess-in-Schools project is expanded in January 2013. The project is being funded and monitored by the Ministry of Education, in selected schools throughout the country," he added.
